Transform your house into a home by ensuring the interior design, the colour scheme, fixtures and fittings reflect your own personality and the objects you love.

The design build of your home will undoubtedly have an affect on what you can physically achieve, however there are many people who successfully transform their homes into havens of pleasure and sanctuary by reducing the size or amount of furniture in each room. Careful consideration should be given to colour scheme for each room and entire home.

It is possible to have a different design for each room, for example a trendy and funky bedroom for a teenage can work well with a more traditional style room as long as the ‘joining’ is coherent. This can be achieved by using the hallway or stairway to take the design style from one type to another without being too harsh or fierce on the eyes.

Fashionable neutral beiges are still among the most used colours for walls in lounges and dining areas. This could be that some people are a little afraid of experimenting with colour!

Be brave and be colour inspired! Use bold colours to make a statement of intent in a room. Small rooms may look too overwhelmed by having all walls painted in a bold colour, if this is the case use the bold colour on a main wall as a focal point. This usually means a chimney breast in older style houses and highlight the same colour in soft furnishings such as cushions and throws. Small rooms painted in light colours can provide the illusion of being larger, however ‘light’ does not necessarily have to mean a bland colour!

A chimney breast which has a bold patterned wall paper can offer a real injection of colour and texture to a room. By only wall papering one wall the colour and pattern will not become too overpowering. The great advantage with wall paper is the ability to select accent colours from the print to provide cohesion to a room. Accent colours used for window dressings and soft furnishings will provide harmony and a sense of visual order.

Window dressings can ‘make or break’ a room. There are numerous different window treatments to chose from which will suit the rooms interior style. Small windows need to have blinds or lightweight curtains otherwise the little amount of light may be reduced to such an extent that the room becomes unnecessarily gloomy and claustrophobic. Blinds fitted into the window recess is a great way of allowing as much natural light into a room as possible.

Lighting also has a dramatic affect on a room’s overall appearance. If a room has small windows and happens to be north facing bold colour will help to brighten it. Using mirrors to reflect light back into the room enables natural light to work more effectively. Large mirrors will also provide the illusion of more space. The choice of artificial lighting should also be given careful consideration. Try using wall and table lamps rather than one central overhead light. Floor and table lamps will provide a much gentler lighting effect than a harsh overhead light.

When deciding to transform your house into a stylish home, you can use different approaches to the various parts of the house in order to minimize your renovation costs.

- The Interior Design Approach

1. One approach that you can employ is by focusing your renovation design towards your staircase. You can change the design of your staircase to make it appear more cozy and modern or use wooden materials with carving designs to have a more traditional and yet stylish look. Redesigning your staircase would also depend on which part of your house, it is located.

2. Once you have redesigned your staircase, the part of the house where it is located should also follow to match with it. If it’s in the living room, then the living room should be redesigned as well. In renovating your living room, you can repaint the walls to match the color of your staircase railings. If the railings are made of wood, then it would best to have a wall paint colored beige or other variants of earth colors. If you still prefer a light colored wall, you can repaint the base of the wall with a darker tone of brown.

3. Aside from transforming the staircase or the ceiling you may also redesign the flooring of your house. A quick and easy way of doing this is by replacing your old flooring with laminate floorings. You can choose from the variety of materials that are used for laminate flooring. For example, if your theme is the more traditional look, then you may use the laminate flooring which resembles wooden parquet flooring. If you are looking for a more environmentally sound floor, then one of the incredibly stylish and durable bamboo flooring options currently on the market may well be a better choice.

- Transforming by Changing the Furniture

4. If renovating the entire interior of the house is too costly for your budget, you may opt to buy new furniture to replace those old and tired looking pieces that are an eyesore. You can purchase new designs of living room sofas with matching sleek and modern center and side tables. 5. You can also purchase a made to order bar if your living room has more space to accommodate this. A living room bar adds excitement and style to any boring traditionally styled living rooms.

So there you have it, five simple yet extremely effective tips for transforming your house into a stylish home. Have fun!

There are many reasons people choose to humidify their homes. Dry air caused by winter or living in a dry climate is responsible for a range of problems. Physical symptoms of dry air include: a dry nose and throat, which can make you feel sick. Other physical problems include chapped lips and tight, dry skin. Dry air can wreak havoc on your home as well. Static electricity is caused by lack of moisture in the air. This lack of moisture causes the air to pull moisture from your wood furniture and floors, causing cracking and splitting.

You can choose a room humidifier or a whole house model. Whole house machines are only available if you use a forced air heating system in your home. Your basic choices for humidifying your home are warm mist, vaporizer, or cool, pure mist humidifiers. Vaporizers cause the least amount of health problems, while cool mist models spread the most germs.

Benefits of Humidifier Filters

For many years, people with respiratory problems have been advised to use a humidifier. This advice is changing, as more is learned about potential dangers associated with these products. Humidifiers can cause respiratory problems, even in people with no history of difficulty. The main causes of these problems are bacteria and mold spores.

Improper use of a humidifier can spread bacteria and mold through the air. These particles are then breathed into the lungs, causing breathing problems and illness. To prevent this, you need to use care when using one of these products in your home. Many cool mist humidifiers are now being made with humidifier filters to help prevent the spread of these particles.

Materials used in Filters

A variety of absorbent materials are used in humidifier filters. Some have microbial coatings. These help reduce bacteria, but can clog easily. To be efficient, they must be changed regularly.

The best choice is a machine that uses High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA). People with allergies or asthma need these products, which are the air filtration option most often recommended by doctors. The material used in making HEPA filters is fiber glass and synthetic resin in a tight weave. This construction traps tiny particles as small as .3 microns. More particles are removed with HEPA than any other filter on the market.

There are a few models on the market that are combination humidifier and HEPA air purifier. People with severe respiratory problems sometimes use a separate air filtration system to keep the air clean. Both machines can be used simultaneously to both moisturize and clean the air without making you ill.

Replacing a used filter

In most cases, you can purchase a replacement filter in the store where you bought your machine. Depending on the store, there may be a less expensive option. Replacements are easily found on the internet for all humidifiers. You need to make sure you get the right product and size for your machine.

Pictures are available on most websites. Look at the brand and model number as well as the picture to be sure you are getting the correct size. Find out if the vendor has a return policy, in case you accidentally order the wrong item. Many companies charge a flat rate for shipping. To save money in the long run, purchase a few at a time. You will always have a spare when you need one.

It’s important to change filters regularly. Check the manufacturer’s directions to determine the frequency. This information is only a guideline. If your machine gets heavy use, replace the filter more often. With even the most minimal use, it should be changed at least once a year, at the end of the season. Discard the old filter before you pack the machine away and put in a new one for the next season.

Humidifier bacteria treatment products are said to extend the life of humidifier filters. These solutions kill bacteria in the water, keeping the filter healthier. You place the solution in the water before every use. A large bottle will last the season because you only need one capful for each application. These products can be purchased in many stores selling humidifiers and at most hardware stores.
